Character Name: Jacob Seed
Series: Far Cry 5
Age: 44
From When?: His death after being killed by the Deputy

Inmate Justification: War crimes aside, Jacob has always been a violent person, even as a kid. He brainwashed people. Made them kill each other. Tortured them in cages, depriving them of food and water for weeks at a time. Just a real stand up fellow.

Arrival: Against his will. Jacob was willing to be the sacrifice and he doesn’t think there’s anything left for him.

Abilities/Powers: He’s a top notch marksman and has a lot of skill with most weapons, including guns, bows, and blades, but otherwise is just a human.

Inmate Information:

Jacob didn't really mean to join the cult, but his brothers found him languishing in a shelter, a shell of himself, and brought him back from the brink. And so he owes himself to Joseph and does believe that a Collapse is coming. The cult part, the God part, doesn't interest him as much as survival. All that he does, all he puts other people through, is for survival.

He takes the people that John brings in and he trains them. His form of training, though, involves locking them in cages outside, depriving them of food and water for as long as possible, and then feeding them dog food when they are near death. He uses a twisted form of classical conditioning to turn them into mindless soldier, strapping them to chairs and making them watch slideshows of gore and violence. He drugs them with Bliss, gives them weapons, and trains them to fight through a gauntlet while the song “Only You” plays in the background. He does this so often that, eventually, the song itself is enough to trigger them into a fugue state where they will obey any order he gives.

He doesn’t care about their lives, though. He doesn’t care about anyone except Joseph and sometimes John and, very rarely, Faith. He doesn’t care about himself. He creates these soldiers and the ones who don’t make it are used as fodder to train the ones who do. He used the Rook to infiltrate the Whitetails, the resistance group that has been fighting against him since the beginning. He made the Rook kill the leader, a man that the Rook had looked up to, and then taunted them about it.

He can’t make himself care about anyone else because he feels, very simply, that there’s nothing else in his life worth caring about.

He believes strongly in survival, that power and strength are the only means to it, and the weak have their place as fodder. And while it would be disingenuous to blame everything on the war, that is where Jacob feels he was tested and where he came through a different person. He killed and ate his friend, Miller, while the two had been stuck in the wilderness, in the desert. Miller had started to falter and Jacob knew he wouldn't last. He felt he had been tested then and the only way he passed was by doing anything to survive.

Jacob has always been violent, though. As the oldest, he was his brothers’ protector for years. He took the beatings from their father so little John wouldn't. The night Joseph forced Jacob to let John get hurt, because the Voice told him to, was the worst night of his life. He felt as if he had failed John, even though it meant that they were finally free of the Seeds. So when they went to their first foster home and faced abuse there, he knew what he had to do. He killed the man with an ax and burned the barn. When he went to juvie for it, he could only hope that he had saved his brothers.

But Jacob only learned how to solve his problems through violence. He enlisted, channeling his aggression into an arguably better outlet. But he thrived there, earning commendations and decorations in his time. after the Miller incident, however, he was discharged and, in classic US fashion, forgotten by the system. He suffered from extreme PTSD, which was treated by a hospital until the money ran out and he ended up in the shelter.

He had given up on himself until he realized his new purpose - following Joseph. Creating soldiers. And eventually, he'd sacrifice himself for his brother.

Path to Redemption:
Jacob will not want to be on the Barge. He fulfilled his purpose as Joseph’s sacrifice, and he expected that would be the end. He didn’t have a long term plan; he never did. In fact, when Joseph is shown what would happen to Jacob if he had survived, he sees that he would be forever fighting against Jacob to keep him from killing John…or himself. Jacob has no plan. He needs to find a purpose for himself.

Unfortunately, that’s likely one of the last things that will happen to him. He needs to learn how to curb his own violence. He needs to develop some empathy or at least not outright hostility for people he considers weak. He needs to learn that weakness isn’t something to be fixed or exploited or use. This will come with trust.

Jacob hasn't been able to trust anyone but himself in a very long time. And when Joseph came, Jacob gave his trust back to him to be abused. Not that Jacob sees it that way, which will need to be addressed first of all. Jacob didn’t have to be a sacrifice. He was abused and neglected by everyone he met, and while he’s adopted this very toxic and misinformed mindset, he has a lot to unlearn from it.

Jacob endured. Jacob survived. But he needs to learn, first and foremost, that there’s more to life than surviving.
